Originally founded in 1961 as a parochial school of Saints Peter and Paul Parish, it was reclassified as a regional school by decree of Archbishop John F. Donoghue in February, 2001. In 1971, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredited the school. In 2006 the Southern Association of Independent Schools also granted full accreditation. In 2013, The Office of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Atlanta was granted full accreditation through AdvancED.
The school consists of three buildings, known as the 100, 200, and 300 buildings. The 100 Building consists of Pre-kindergarten to Grade 4, a clinic, staff meeting room, faculty lounge, resource classroom, storage areas, and guidance counseling area. The 200 Building houses Grades 5 through 8 , Spanish classroom, media center, science lab, and a computer lab. The 300 Building, the school’s newest addition, consists of a state-of-the-art gymnasium, school offices, music room, and art room.
As part of the strategic initiative for the transformation of urban education in the Archdiocese, St. Peter Claver Regional Catholic School was identified as the anchor Catholic school for families in the central city and surrounding suburbs of Atlanta.

ACCREDITATION AND RECOGNITION
Effective June 2013, the schools in the Archdiocese of Atlanta are accredited through the District-wide Accreditation model sponsored by AdvancEd, the parent corporation of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). St. Peter Claver Regional Catholic School is also a member of the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA).
